The ending was a let-down and Skamreta couldn’t get invested in any of the characters. At first I loved it, then half way through I really wasn’t not enjoying it. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account.
Gictoria, there’s the very good chance that, if I read this in Spanish, I might not have realized how much sex there was in this. Entre esas complicaciones, la vida de la joven Victoria esta en peligro.
Some of you might find it predictable. At first I loved it, then half way through I really wasn’t not enjoying it.
The would-be dancer and the would-be thief, but also the accomplished maestro-thief, the warden who gave the would-be thief reason to murder him, the murderer whom the warden sneaks out of prison to stalk the would-be thief, the maestro-thief’s partner’s lover Mar 05, Marianne rated it it was ok.
And it was marvelous fun every time I read about a Santiago commonthing to point at the page and go “ohhh, I know that! I liked the lyrical language and descriptive pieces, especially the short chapter where Angel is riding the horse. So, star for that. Weaving politics, ballet and a spectacular robbery together, Skarmeta helps one understand Chile in the days it was recovering from political chaos.
Works translated from original Spanish have a different rhythm This is not my type of book at all, but I loved it anyway. However if I had to recommend a book by him, this would have been antoonio The dancer and the thief is the kind of novel that almost any reader will like.
Together, these three central characters try to find themselves and their calling while struggling with depressions, lack of money and relationships, while, unbeknownst to Angel, there is someone pursuing antonoi to kill him.
It’s probably clear by now that this left me underwhelmed, but I’m still holding out hope that I’ll like some of the remaining Skarmeta books I’ve yet to read.
I really enjoyed this book. There was some great lyrical writing in this book, even with the translation. Open Preview See a Problem?
The Dancer and the Thief
If I had to complain at all, I would object to the title of the translation, which doesn’t do justice to the rich cast of characters. Sep 11, Elizabeth Alaska rated it really liked it. These two prove that love isn’t easy, but it can be amazing. When I first finished the book, I felt this way, but on reflecting on the conclusion, I felt it was the right way to end the book.

Although the translator handled the small nuances well, those are the sorts of things that I tend to appreciate most in the original language. View all 6 comments. He went to prison for a robbery and kept silent on his partner the whole time, only to find out that his half of the robbery was spent by his partner.
The story does end abruptly, as though the author suddenly got sick of trying to tie it all together. Aug 19, Suzanne rated it did not like it.

Three quarters of the way I baie to like it again, buuut I did not like the ending. From my amateur point of view, the translation seemed good, but I think I would have enjoyed it more in Spanish.

The dancer and the thief is the kind of novel that almost any reader will like. A few too many sex scenes, and although young love is involved, some were tender and passionate, yet some of the other descriptions I felt were crude.

It is a fast read though, and a huge hit abroad xntonio I thought it was j I heard the Antonio Skarmeta interviewed on NPR and thought this book sounded interesting. Inhe was a member of the jury at the 37th Berlin International Film Festival. I felt I was watching a very cheap, very very cheap, Latin telenovela. There still were light touches qntonio humor and lyricism victoriia and there, but they weren’t really memorable.
