The concept was perfectly new and daring for those times. She was once earlier set to marry Mahendra and later Bihari but was discarded by both.

A fascinating character study and a wonderful cultural insight. I was kinda disappointed with the translation and I feel that no translation can do justice to Tagore’s prose unless he does it himself.

She has a contrasting sense of character within herself. She manages to captivate Mahendra. The contradictions of thought in people, the bittersweet symphony of life, the way emotion seems to rise up in importance at times and their enlgish dwindles to nothing, how convictions are broken, how people fall in and out of love – everything is so beautifully written here. In spite of the affair, Behari was also in her thoughts and she held him in high regard for his uprightness and patriotic zeal.

This is one of those books that englksh me to take up Bengali again Chokher Bali is a melodramatic and rather sexual tale of family, love and loss. Separately, I rate the translation 2, which has clearly gone wrong at a number of places, and only makes me wish I could read Bengali.

Kinda goes against laws of self-love and self-respect. It gets two stars from me primarily because i was reading a translation.

Its a must read for anyone who’s wanting bbook read on human relations.
