An introduction to linear algebra from the pure math perspective. Finite-Dimensional Vector Spaces. Paul R. Halmos The book ends with a few applications to analysis (Halmos’s true interest in the subject). Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces combines algebra and geometry to discuss the three-dimensional area where vectors can be plotted. The book broke ground.

Scott Sutherland rated it really liked it Dec 26, It has a heavy emphasis on doing things in the most rigorous, “proper” way vecyor, written for the purest mathematicians at heart. As a newly minted Ph. In Halmos received the coveted Steele Prize for exposition from the American Mathematical Society for “his many graduate texts in mathematics dealing with finite dimensional vector spaces, measure theory, ergodic theory, and Hilbert space. Like Halmo’s book “Linear Algebra Problem Book”, this provides the reader with truly hzlmos insights!

In the last year, I have covered finote than half of the book, and asked lots of questions in this site about the material, so if you stuck at some point as I have done, you can check out the posts that I have asked, or directly post a question in here obviouslyI would be happy to answer if I can. User Review – Flag as inappropriate I’m going to have to agree with the other “outlier” review here. The presentation is never awkward or dry, as it sometimes is in other “modern” textbooks; it is as unconventional as one has come to expect from the author.

Thanks for any recommendations. The book continues to exert its influence sixty years after publication, as linear algebra is now widely used, not only in mathematics but also in the natural and social sciences, for studying such subjects as weather problems, traffic flow, electronic circuits, and population genetics.
