Back then Victoria Holt was one of my favourite authors. Therefore, the setting, the well-crafted plot, and the believable characters all add up to a very good read. It was a lot like Mary Stewart’s books which I’ve read mostly all so I was hoping to find another author similar to her.

Of the one ‘bad’ decision she made, I wouldn’t call it stupidness, only really bad timing, as it brought her into peril. The mansion was built in the s from s stone taken from an abbey and the ruins of the abbey near the grounds add further mystery to the setting. I really enjoyed it. While the love part didn’t sit well with me between Catherine and Simon – as they seemed to rarely talk and about things that suggested they even liked each other, but Catherine was an okay character to like.
